Expansive visual impact. Large format tile tricks the eye into perceiving a larger room. Floors feel broader, walls appear taller, and everything reads more intentional and cohesive.
Easier long term cleaning. Fewer grout lines mean less maintenance, fewer areas for grime to accumulate, and a longer lasting clean appearance.
Cons
Installation requires more expertise. Large format tile is significantly less forgiving. Installers need to be skilled, patient, and well equipped.
Subfloor must be extremely level. Even slight imperfections become more noticeable as tile size increases.
More material weight. Large tiles are heavier to transport, cut, and handle, which can increase labor difficulty and cost.
Why We Went With Large Format Tile
We wanted our build to feel modern, clean, and intentionally designed. Large format tile aligned perfectly with that goal. It delivers a higher end aesthetic, instantly makes spaces feel more open, and gives that seamless, expansive look that reads as contemporary and luxurious.
Another big reason was grout lines. We wanted as few as possible. Fewer grout joints create a calmer visual experience and give the flooring and walls a continuous flow.
Overall, the choice came down to three factors: a more modern look, a more expensive and refined appearance, and a more expansive open feel.
What I Learned
The biggest lesson learned was the importance of hiring installers who are truly experienced with large format tile. This type of tile demands precision. Cuts must be exact, angles must be perfect, and the leveling system has to be used correctly. Large tiles do not hide mistakes. A single misaligned tile can affect several square feet and become a very costly fix.
I also learned that an expansive and elevated look does not have to cost an arm and a leg. There are plenty of beautiful large format tile options under four dollars per square foot, which means you can achieve a modern, high end style without blowing the budget. Thoughtful sourcing can stretch your design dollar much further than expected.
